How to Clean and Remove Stain from Pillow
Every night, you lay your head down on your pillow to go to sleep. While you might not think much of it at the time, you are actually soiling that pillow slightly each time you use it. Even the cleanest of people is going to pass sweat and oils into their pillow which will gradually accumulate over time. Sure, your pillow case will help to protect the pillow itself, but eventually that pillow is going to need a wash. Understanding how to clean and remove stains from your pillows will help you get a better night’s sleep, and the process is actually rather simple.
Know Your Pillows
What kind of pillows do you have? If you don’t know the answer to this question right off the top of your head, take a moment to look at the tags of each pillow on your bed. Most likely, your pillows will fall into one of two categories – down and fiberfill pillows, or foam pillows. It is important that you know what you own because there are different methods for cleaning each style. The right choice for how to clean and remove stains from pillows is going to be significantly different for a down pillow as compared to a foam pillow. You can damage your pillows (and your washing machine) by making the wrong selection, so check your tags carefully before proceeding.
Down Pillows Go in the Wash
If you are using down or fiberfill pillows, you should be able to place those pillows directly into the washing machine. Most pillows will do best when washed in warm water on the gentle cycle. However, you should always heed the washing advice that can be found on the tag of the pillow. If the directions of the manufacturer provide different advice, trust their instructions as they are the people who made the pillow in the first place. Once the pillow is washed, a ride in the dryer on low heat should be able to dry out the inside of the pillow without causing damage. Many modern dryers have an ‘auto-dry’ function which senses when clothes are dry, but such as setting should not be trusted in this case. When drying something with a thick interior like a pillow (as opposed to a t-shirt or pants), the sensor in the dryer will not be as accurate. Dry the pillow on low heat and check on it regularly until you feel that it is dry.
Foam Pillows Stay Away from Washer
On the other side of the equation, foam pillows should not be placed into your washing machine. The foam inside of the pillow can swell up when it gets wet, and the pillow may be ruined in the process. Instead, take the cover off of the pillow and use a vacuum upholstery tool to clean off each side. A quick vacuuming will at least remove the dust and dirt from the outside of your pillow. If you wish to wash off the pillow, use a damp cloth with very little moisture to avoid getting the foam inside wet. Of course, just as with the down pillows, always follow any manufacturer instructions for cleaning that are present on the tag.
Pillows don’t last forever, so be sure to replace yours when they reach the point of no return.
